How To Establish A Successful Bath & Bedtime Routine for Your Baby

Bathtime is a favourite time of day for parents and babies alike. It’s a time to unwind, relax and bond with your baby after a hectic day. A bath followed by baby massage and deliberate quiet time before bed creates the perfect separation between “busy time” and “sleep time”, and is a wonderful way of preparing your little one for sleep.

Bathing your baby

You’ll need to make sure the water feels comfortably warm. Always fill the bath with cold water first, adding hot water to mix thoroughly. A baby’s bath should be between 37 and 38 degrees celsius.

Water alone isn’t sufficient in cleaning your baby’s skin. Water can’t break down the fat-soluble impurities that nappies and food can leave behind, which can actually cause the delicate skin barrier to break down. Water can also dry your baby’s skin by reducing its moisture, leaving it irritated or red.

Babies’ delicate skin can lose moisture faster than adult skin, so using an effective cleanser such as JOHNSON’S® pH balanced Baby Bath containing baby oil will gently cleanse without drying. The unique NO MORE TEARS® formula is as gentle to the eyes as water.

Health professionals usually recommend bathing your newborn two to three times a week, increasing the frequency as your baby gets older.

Moisturise after bath

Passed down from generation to generation, JOHNSON’S® classic Baby Lotion is mild enough to moisturise and clean the most delicate skin, leaving it soft and smelling baby fresh. This is perfect for use after baby’s bath before dressing.

JOHNSON’S® Gentle All Over Baby Wipes are super useful for every other eventuality. Bottoms, hands or chubby little cheeks – JOHNSON’S® Baby Wipes can be used everywhere! Hypoallergenic and cotton soft, these wipes are enriched with a lotion made from 97% pure water so they’ll leave skin feeling soft and cared for.

Baby massage

Baby massage can be an extremely soothing part of the bath and bedtime routine and a wonderful way of ensuring your baby feels loved and secure just before they go to sleep.

Specially developed for newborn skin, JOHNSON’S® iconic Baby Oil creates a light protective barrier on the skin, locking in more than double the moisture of baby lotion and is the perfect product to use for baby massage.

Massage can really help you to bond with your baby, so although your little one may seem very delicate, don’t be afraid to start a massage routine shortly after birth.
