We were so excited to interview English philanthropist, television presenter and model, Katie Piper, a woman who is a complete inspiration to us. Katie was the victim of a sulpheric acid attack back in 2008, but has since then gone on to raise awareness for burn victims, launching charity The Katie Piper Foundation, which seeks to improve the lives of burns survivors in the UK. Katie has a two-year-old daughter Belle, and has recently launched her own collection of baby products for My Babiie. We track her down to ask her how she’s finding motherhood, and get the low-down on her new business venture.
Tell us about your new venture, the collaboration with My Babiie, and what inspired you to explore the world of retail?
I’m so pleased it’s finally launched, it’s been a long time in planning and I’ve wanted to launch a collection since my daughter Belle was born. The collection is inspired by nature and carries a sense of freedom and happiness, the ethos of how I am as a mother, for example I have a few olive, khaki and desert sage designs and colour ways, and two of my prints are very nature led with butterflies and swallows. I named the range ‘Believe’ just to remind new parents to believe in themselves and have faith in the knowledge that they are doing great. That’s why I wanted to include the milestone cards too – which are all about happiness, positivity and memories. I have 6 different designs and colour ways in total for my first range – a really great selection of pushchairs, travel systems and a high chair. I was involved in the design process from the beginning, and the team at MyBabiie really listened to my vision and ideas which was great!
What product are you most excited about from your new range ‘Believe, By Katie Piper’ by My Babiie?
It’s so hard to pick as I actually believe there’s an option for all tastes. I do think the desert sage travel system will be really popular – it’s a neutral colour and under £300 so for new parents it’s design led, looks great but it is affordable and great value for money! I must say though that I LOVE the khaki stripe pushchair and olive pushchairs – really lovely colours you don’t see everywhere!
How is motherhood treating you? What’s your favourite thing about being a mum, and we have to ask – your least, and the things you found most challenging?
Now Belle is two and half she is able to have proper conversations with me and it’s just amazing to be able to say ‘I love you’, and she says it back, adding on the end ‘loads and loads and loads’ – so cute! A lot of my work goes on into the evenings and takes me to other parts of the country so it’s a constant race home to not miss too many bedtimes. I constantly try to fight the mummy guilt when I miss story time and not able to tuck her in.
What are your three tops tips for new mums out there?
Believe in yourself. With self belief comes confidence and with confidence we can achieve great things. Always carry raisins – these are my bribe to Belle and I’ve tricked her into thinking they are sweets. Try to keep a little pre-baby life you – e.g. if before you got your nails done every 3 weeks, keep doing that. Ask a grandparent to help you for few hours so you are able to keep doing some of the bits that made you YOU before.
What’s the one baby product that you couldn’t live without?
My Babiie stroller of course! Belle is so energetic now but still gets tired easily – we’ve had family days out ruined because I forgot to bring the buggy and we are stuck with a grumpy two year old who doesn’t want to walk around the zoo and needs to be carried!
Are you a good cook? Share with us your favourite family recipe.
I cook a lot and am really learning – I like to cook healthy meals for the family and I really enjoy it! My husband is a great cook too which is always a bonus!
Recipe = salmon curry with a side of avocado.
What’s your idea of the perfect family weekend?
Quality time with Belle and my whole family, parents, siblings, and in-laws.
What plans do you have for 2017?
Next year is super-exciting for me. I am obviously very excited about my My Babiie range as I can’t wait to hear the feedback from new mums and dads. I’m also really looking forward to releasing my 5th book, ‘Confidence, The Secret’ ! I’m continuing to work with Channel 4 too which I really do enjoy, you’ll hear more on that very soon! Also, not forgetting my charity, The Katie Piper Foundation which remains my ‘day job’ – my focus is always on this and improving the lives of burns survivors in the UK.
How would you sum yourself up in one sentence?
Determined, chaotic and gentle.
Katie’s Believe Range is available now at My Babiie.
