I had such a lovely morning judging the baby & toddler, food and snacks at the Boom Awards last week, which is run by the incredible Soil Association. The 2016 Boom Awards was bigger than ever this year, and I loved hanging out with Annabel Kindersley, the force behind my favourite, Neil’s Yard, and Nell Card, the editor of Guardian Cook. It was a really funny morning because I hadn’t set eyes on baby food for quite some time, and we were faced by a long trestle table with little white pots flowing with the latest in baby foods, snacks and children’s food in general.

Although all three of us professed to making our baby’s fresh food, the world of organic baby pouches has come a long way! Each item was numbered and we weren’t allowed to see the packaging, or have an idea of what we were about to eat. That would be cheating! We giggled over plates of puree, and tried to guess the flavours which ranged from apples and bananas, to prunes and butternut squash.

The snacks were definitely our favourites, and there were some really interesting things being trailed and tested. Organic food for babies and children is something we often get asked about at My Baba, and I think as parents, we do the best we can. It’s wonderful to see so many companies popping up all the time, with organics at the heart of their business. I’m a huge believer in the mantra ‘you are what you eat’, and it’s very important to start babies off on the right foot when weaning.

A couple of tips from My Baba… I follow the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists, to see which fruits and vegetables are most and least contaminated by pesticide use, and I also try to eat as seasonally as possible, and I find this Eat Seasonably calendar seriously helpful when it comes to the weekly shop. After a morning of judging at the Boom Awards I’m very excited to see what came up trumps.
