Where to eat:
I’ve been driving past Sopwell House for many years, and had always assumed it was just another hotel. On the contrary, they’ve packed a lot into this handsome building located just outside the centre of St Albans, and it’s anything but ordinary. After a brief tour of a plush looking gym, attractive spa and indoor swimming pool, we headed for pre-dinner drinks in the cocktail bar. The staff were welcoming and professional, and the prices were exactly what you would expect at a luxury hotel in this location. We paid approximately £20 for a cocktail and large single malt whisky.
The restaurant, like the bar, was very pleasantly lit and decked out, with an Anglo-French feel; it was perfect for a dinner for two. I imagine that a family with younger children might not be best suited to the atmosphere. The staff were friendly and very efficient. In fact, our only criticism was the efficiency: we would have liked a slightly more relaxed pace of service, with more time between courses. Having said that, we were not rushed away from the table. The a la carte menu (£30 for 2 courses and £35 for three), had a nice selection of choices. The food was elegantly presented, delicious, and we didn’t walk away feeling hungry! We had scallops and chicken terrine for starters, and a fillet of Angus Beef and venison for mains. The blackberry cheesecake I had for dessert was marvellous.
We would definitely go back.
