Getting back in shape after you’ve had your baby is tough. It can be impossible to simply find the time to spend on yourself, and any time you do manage to snatch can often be accompanied by feelings of guilt for not being there. This is why I love the idea of the new fitness craze CARiFiT. It’s a workout created for mothers to do with their baby. It’s challenging, fun and also fantastic way to spend time with your little one, not to mention a great way to meet other mothers with children of the same age.

Energetic, sweaty and fun, CARiFiT is a 30minute cardio-resistance interval workout, which sees new mums take part in a pre-choreographed sensory music class wearing their baby on their front.  Never been seen before, CARiFiT has been carefully created for mothers with babies aged six weeks to six months old, and encourages the reintroduction of exercise, as well as an opportunity for mums to get closer to their baby whilst working out.

CARiFiT encourages social and physical benefits for new mums, focusing on restoring a mother’s core, strengthening their overall posture, increasing their heart rate and all while meeting new like-minded mums. The workout is punctuated with bursts of sensory music for the babies, which often results in them drifting off to sleep during the class, as the mums work-up a sweat and feel the rush of endorphins again.

Created and designed by pre-and-post natal specialist Personal Trainer, Vern Hill of Hill-Battersea, in collaboration with global fitness expert, Vicky Mahony, CARiFiT has been certified by top industry and medical professionals. Alongside a certified industry specialist, Vern Hill created a CARiFiT qualification, to ensure the class is regulated continuously throughout the UK. The certified level of instructor will also be required to have a minimum level 3 qualification and must already be trained in pre and post natal fitness before undergoing the qualification.

CARiFiT has been created specifically to reflect the needs of a new mum, it has been observed and approved by GPs, Midwives, Physiotherapists and fitness industry experts – so we know that it is a safe and sensible route back to exercise.

A question we get asked a lot is ‘which baby carrier should I use?’ in short, whichever baby carrier, sling or wrap you wear is an incredibly personal choice and certainly not one we will make for you. We work closely with the British Association of Babywearing Instructors (BABi) to ensure all our teachers have knowledge of various carrier types and optimum fitting and position of each type.

It is a real workout and based on four principles, Squat, Lunge, Balance and Stretch, you will sweat, your heart rate will rise and you will feel fantastic afterwards, so bring water and a towel to your class. Your babies don’t sweat though, they just enjoy bouncing along and being close to you, normally we find the babies drift off to sleep. When you baby does want to fall to sleep It’s important the baby is then turned on to their front in the carrier.

Vern Hill, Co-creator and PT Professional commented: “I developed CARiFiT as I have been working with pre and post natal women for over 10 years and I know how much confusion and misinformation is out there about post natal exercise, this was my drive to develop CARiFiT. I wanted to create a class that reflected the needs of the post natal body and mind whilst still being a proper, sweaty and fun workout, CARiFiT is a fun and energetic class, for mothers to really enjoy, see results from and feel that special bond with their baby that comes from babywearing in all its forms. I want new parents to feel energised, motivated, mentally strong and get to out there and meet other new parents, that has always been my main objective. As my wife has just had our second child, I know first-hand how important this is.”

Professional acknowledgement:

Toby Sullivan, MCSP, “CARiFiT is the perfect functional exercise class for new mums, helping to restore the body and accounting for all the bodies needs post birth.”

Dr Nishel Patel, GP Senior Partner, Head of Maternity and Midwifery services, Denham Medical Centre commented, “The benefits to both mother and baby whilst taking a CARiFiT class are enormous. Physiological benefits aside the mental health implications are incredibly positive, removing the isolation and upheaval commonly associated with new mums. Exercise wise the class ticks all the boxes, low impact and promoting good posture and alignment throughout the body.”

Dr Eleanor Smith, General Practitioner commented, “CARiFiT is a wonderfully safe and well thought out reintroduction to exercise post birth, beyond the physical benefits it has huge positive implications to the social and emotional wellbeing of new mums and their babies.”
