If you are planning a trip away during autumn half term, you’ll want to check out this column on our recommended, tried and tested products to ensure your trip with the family goes without a hitch. In addition to all the normal paraphernalia, nappies, musys, and endless piles of clothes you’ll need to cram into your cases, here are some must-have products to add to the packing list.

Kids love to get involved. A Trunki is a great way of letting them pack their own clothes and be a part of the holiday from the off. They are also a great ride-on toy too!

When staying in the UK for a holiday you can never tell if the weather is going to be wall to wall sunshine or a complete wash-out, so it’s always good to take a few games to play on a wet day just in case you can’t get out.

If you’re travelling with an infant, you’ll want to take your own cot. We recommend the SpaceCot, as it’s so compact, and folds up into an on the shoulder bag. It also doubles up as a play pen.

When staying away with a toddler who is not quite ready for a big bed yet, but too big for a travel cot, you’ll need to be armed with  a handy bed guard. Bed guards give you peace of mind that the first night in a big bed is not going to end in tears… on the floor. My daughter Maisie is making use of one of these guards at the moment, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Night lights are something I always forget when staying away, but these portable night lights from Munchkin are great as you don’t need to worry about plugging them in, perfect for camping too!

If you rely on sounds to get your baby to sleep it can be a pain packing large plug-in machines, and of course it’s impossible to take the noise of your neighbourhood with you. This great portable sound machine is a great way of creating some noise for your baby and the best part, is that it takes up very little space in your suitcase.

Another great product is a fold away travel gate. You don’t want to be hauling around a huge metal gate and screwing it into the walls where you’re staying. These pressure gates are perfect to ensure your little one doesn’t take it upon themselves to climb down the stairs after dark, they won’t damage the paintwork, and they take up very little room.

FlexiGuard Portable Safety Barrier from Munchkin

When taking a trip by car, it’s essential that everything you decide to pack saves space. This Joie Pact pushchair is a perfect space saver and lives up to its name. It is also suitable from birth, so fab for reflux babies, of which Maddie is one.

The Shnuggle bath is perfect for taking away – you can pack lots of things inside the bath and it fits easily into a small space in the boot or backseat. It’s great for using on the kitchen table.

If you’re on holiday, and like me, have a little one just learning to potty train one of these will come in handy. You can pop them in your boot or at the bottom of your pushchair and off you go. They also seal shut so you can close the lid and dispose of the contents when in a suitable place to do so.

If your little one isn’t quite ready for a big chair but you don’t want to lug a high chair on holiday, these fabric chair harnesses are great for keeping them secure and they take up virtually no space.

Going on walks can be fun for the whole family but when you don’t have the security of the pushchair having a set of reins are great to make sure your little one doesn’t run into trouble.
