If there was one organic product that you could make everyone use what would that be?
I am a great believer in the benefits of eating organic meat. In the organic farming system the animal welfare standards are incredibly high, which means the animals live a better and more natural life. The animals can’t routinely be given antibiotics and our animals at Daylesford all have a forage based diet. When this is the case, the animals often produce a better quality of meat, which also tastes better. The organic way of farming is not only better for us, but for the animals and our environment.
What’s the most popular product at Daylesford?
Our Real Meals, which are the ‘adult version’ of the Mini Meals, are at the moment the most popular of our products. They are made on our farm using meat from the farm and vegetables wherever possible. When creating the recipes for this range, we were aware of how busy so many of our customers are in their day-to-day lives, we wanted to give them something tasty, nutritious and simple to heat up.
What’s your favourite Daylesford product?
I love our cheddar cheese. I am not sure if this is because it was the first thing we ever made at Daylesford or because it has that old, traditional, farmhouse cheddar taste, which I really enjoy. It’s delicious with bread and chutney, and it’s also great to cook with – cheese on toast, macaroni cheese or a cheese soufflé are particular favourites. I was so proud when the cheddar won a gold award at the British Cheese Awards in 2003, the first year it was made in the creamery, and it still continues to win awards.
What one piece of advice would you give to a new mother?
As a mother and now a grandmother, I would urge all parents to feed their baby with as fresh and seasonal food as possible. I appreciate that organic produce can cost more, but also whenever possible too, to cook with organic ingredients. After all, you are what you eat.
What’s next on the Mini Meals’ agenda?
In the spring we will introduce new Mini Meals which will be lighter, taking lots of fresh seasonal ingredients from our farm which will be perfect for summer lunches and teas.
How would you sum yourself up in one sentence?
Can I use a word rather than a sentence? If so… Passionate.
