Maternity Style for Autumn/Winter

Many women hit a wardrobe crisis when their pregnancy curves start to appear, often making the mistake of buying larger sizes in regular clothes or sticking to a uniform of a few basic maternity tops worn with jeans. Keeping up with new season trends is often the farthest thing on your mind and so it’s no wonder women can feel they’ve entered a style rut!

Sara & I have five children between us so we have plenty of first-hand experience of maternity dressing across the seasons and for all kinds of eventualities. Whether you need to look slick at the office, want to feel relaxed and comfortable at a weekend brunch with friends or need to be party-ready for the evening, we understand it can be a sartorially challenging time!

At Madderson London, we firmly believe women shouldn’t have to sacrifice their sense of style when pregnant. Our approach is to elevate maternity wear beyond basic stretch-jersey to help women feel good about themselves and actually look forward to dressing their bump for social occasions.

Keeping it classic with simple silhouettes that flatter your bump and then adding statement jewelry or a fabulous handbag works very well. It’s also a good idea to have a couple of items in your maternity wardrobe that are more ‘special’. Six months is a long time to go without any fashion indulgences so invest in at least one dress and one or two tops in a striking print that make you feel good and make dressing for nights out much less of a chore.

This season’s trends are very workable for maternity dressing and we’ve highlighted several here:

Channel the Avengers and embrace this season’s 60s vibe with a thigh-skimming A-line shift; Dress like a duchess in sumptuous fabrics with eye-catching embellishments that add a finishing touch to your outfit; Embrace your softer side with an on-trend feminine pussy-bow neckline that will drape beautifully over your bump.

Another way of approaching maternity dressing is to plan your wardrobe around 3 key looks: workwear, weekend wear and evening wear.

For work, a dress with clever tailoring over the bump or premium quality jersey with flattering ruching at the sides will prove incredibly useful. For weekend wear, I’m a big fan of the effortless maxi dress that can be worn with an on-trend biker jacket, scarf and flats or sneakers at the weekend. This is kick-back time and the simplicity of a super comfortable maxi dress is just what you need. For evening wear, a killer pair of skinny jeans or maternity leather leggings can be life-savers. Paired with a beautiful silk top, it’s amazing how transformative this outfit can be – from pregnant lady to ‘sexy mama’ in an instant!

So, the trick to chic maternity dressing is to keep your look simple yet stylish. Mix a few statement pieces with a selection of quality basics then sprinkle with on-trend accessories (that will outlast the pregnancy) and you will look as special as you feel.
