Introducing Bozena Birt, Managing Director of Blossom Mother & Child, a company that guides women in their journey into, though-out and beyond maternity. Bozena has two children, 7 year old Oliver, a budding artist and 5 year old Alexa. They live in Putney, London.

As Managing Director of Blossom Mother & Child, what’s been the biggest challenge business-wise so far?

I like to look at everything as an opportunity rather than a challenge – from making time for my kids to keeping my team motivated.  I’d say my main priority as MD is to set the direction for the business so the team can find the must-have products and deliver our shared vision.

You’re a connoisseur of baby/children’s gadgets – what are your new favourites on the market?

As a busy mum, a new favourite find is French brand Beaba. All their products are modern yet stylish and designed to help mum make bedtime, bathtime and mealtime as stress and hassle free as possible. Some standout buys would be the Babycook Solo Machine, BIB Expresso Maker and 4 in 1 Thermometer.

Then there’s aden + anais who although best known for their amazing swaddles and muslins have recently brought out a great gadget called the ‘serenity star’. This sweetly glowing star is actually five innovative products in one. It can work as a feeding diary, sound machine to soothe baby, nightlight, room temperature indicator and digital clock.

We also stock the award-winning ‘Baby Ping’ which is a really great product if you are tech-savvy. It allows you to monitor baby through your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. It’s a brilliant way to always be connected to your little one.

Blossom Mother & Child is known for its designer maternity wear – what are the staple items of clothing mums should acquire for this autumn /winter?

We always start with a pair of jeans!  Honestly, during pregnancy you will absolutely live in jeans and getting a quality pair that will see their way through your pregnancy is key.  You’ll wear them more than anything else in your wardrobe. Blossom was the first to work with favourite designer labels such as 7 For All Mankind, AG and J Brand, customising the seasonal mainline collections with our trademark Blossom Band for a gorgeous fit and on-trend look.  And of course, we have our own Blossom maternity jeans as well.  We have styles and fits to suit just about everyone.

What are your tips on how to juggle a family life with a successful career?

There are really no silver bullets here; everyone has to find the balance that works for them.  I manage to take the kids to school most days and get back in time to read with them and tuck them into bed. There’s always after they’re asleep to carry on with work.

Having said that, one tip I do have is the following: when you come home at the end of the day, leave work behind, drop bags at the door and be ready for the kids garrulous onslaught as everything they did in the day trips gleefully from their tongues. Even if you really want to just change your clothes, have a shower and relax for a few minutes in preparation for this, you’ll miss those really special, spontaneous moments.

How do you chill out after a hard day?

Generally with a glass of chilled French wine!  When I have a little more time I’m reading for the month’s book club… but then I’m usually back to blog-reading, checking out competitor web sites and then looking at ours (okay, so maybe I’m not really that good at chilling out completely during the week!)

What’s on top of your to-do list this week?

Rebuilding our website! We’re in the middle of introducing some great new features to improve our online shopping experience. We’re set on recreating the same special and personable experience our customers get in our boutiques.

What was the hardest part about becoming a mother and what tips can you offer to our readers who are expecting?

As a bit of an A-type I do like to plan and know when things are going to happen. Whilst Gina Ford was definitely right for me and helped me create some structure around timings, a baby is still a baby! The biggest tip I can give is to try to relax, enjoy and don’t worry about every little thing. These tiny little lovely beings are actually quite robust!

It’s also really important to find a good babysitter. That way when you want to go out you can completely relax knowing your kids are happy with someone you trust. In London have never let me down.

What’s in the pipeline for you next?

Making Blossom a household name for anyone pregnant, thinking of getting pregnant, with a young baby, or anyone who knows anyone pregnant or with a newborn!

What’s the one baby product you couldn’t have lived without?

Ah, that is a tough one!  I love one of our recent finds – the baby aspirator of aspirators – BEABA BALLIDOO ELECTRIC NOSE ASPIRATOR FOR BABY!  My daughter Alexa seemed to have an eternally blocked nose and I was forever trying to clear it without damaging the gentle tissue inside her nose.

And aden swaddles and muslins, one can never have too many.  Perfect for keeping clothes clean from spittle, being discreet when nursing in public, covering buggy to keep bright sun off sleeping baby and so much more.

How would you sum yourself up in one sentence?

I am an energetic and ambitious person with a passion for excellence, no matter what I do.
