The baby shower is still a relatively new idea in the UK, having slowly floated over from the US but as it seems to be becoming an increasingly popular celebration we thought we’d give you the low-down on what they’re all about. A baby shower is a gathering, often for the women in a family and circle of friends, to celebrate and get excited about the arrival of a new baby.  Baby showers are like most other parties in that decorations are put up, food is served, games are played and gifts are given to the expectant mother. It may not be a well known celebration in this part of the world but isn’t it a fabulous way for friends to get together, have fun and pass on advice and wisdom? So if your friend or relative is expecting, why not throw a baby shower for them?

If you’re thinking about what colour scheme to go for, pink or blue might seem the simplest choice and of course there are plenty of decorations and accessories to co-ordinate with these colours. But if you don’t know whether it’s a boy or girl or you’d rather not go down the traditional route you can always choose a pastel or neutral colour palette made up of mint and yellow or cream and beige.

Food can be made up of snacks and nibbles and although you can choose to have a large decorated cake, this isn’t essential.

Activities for the celebration include playing baby themed games, exchanging stories, giving gifts and passing on advice and wisdom to the expectant mother. A stylish way of passing on love and wishes to the mum and her family would be to use a wishing tree. The tree is perfect as it creates a wonderful centrepiece on a table and is a symbolic way for guests to write and pass on messages of advice and best wishes by hanging them on the tree.
