Charlotte Olympia Dellal My Baba 23 September, 2013 Features, Interviews This week we interviewed the amazing designer Charlotte Olympia Dellal, founder of the delicious designer shoe store Charlotte Olympia. Charlotte has two sons and a pet dog, and a very enviable shoe collection! We are huge fans of Charlotte Olympia and were thrilled to learn of your new collection. Tell us what inspired you to design a range for children with a matching adults’ collection. l refer to to the “Incy’ collection as a selection of miniatures rather than children’s shoes. I like to have a sense of humour in my work and that often manifests itself in child like details. It felt a natural step to introduce this selection of shoes that are a take on my classic designs from my ‘Encore’ collection. All of your shoes are stamped with a spiderweb ono the soles – tell us about the inspiration behind this. When I started my business I wanted to build a brand, the spider web logo idea came from one of my favourite children’s books, E.B. White’s ‘Charlotte’s Web’. Where’s your favourite holiday destination and what are your top tips for travelling with children? I’m half Brazilian so Rio is my home away from home. I also love Formentera and hope to revisit – short haul is always better with children! Who would you most like to see wearing a pair of your shoes? Children who want to have fun and enjoy dressing from the feet up from an early age. How do you always look so effortlessly glamorous – what’s your one style and one beauty tip? I like to look glamorous but keep it easy. I always set my hair into 1940’s waves using setting lotion; this can last for a few days. I keep my make up simple and fresh with just red lipstick, blusher and mascara. My tip would be always have a pedicure, now that I design shoes everyone looks down at my feet! What other up and coming children’s brands do you find most exciting? La Coqueta Kids is a recently launched Spanish brand in Hampstead. I believe children should dress like children and they have beautiful colourful clothes that are both classic and fun for a decent price. Also, www.verbaudet.com is a good online store for children’s clothing and furnishings. What was the hardest part about becoming a mother and what tips can you offer to our readers who are expecting? It’s true when they say that children grow up so fast, enjoy every moment. We’re dying to know – what is your all-time favourite pair of shoes and how many pairs do you have in your wardrobe? I sample all my shoes in my size so technically I have a pair of every shoe I have ever made. I archive particularly special styles that are kept brand new in their box. I like to know that I have extra pairs of favourites as I’m the kind of person that wears things till they die! What’s the one baby product you couldn’t have lived without? Baby wipes, I carry them everywhere I go. How would you sum yourself up in one sentence? Never be too serious!
