Dear Zita,

My partner and I have been trying to get pregnant for well over a year now. I am taking Clomid as prescribed by my gynaecologist and this will be my third month of taking it. The dosage is 50mg and I take it on days 2-6 of my cycle.

My partner has had a recent sperm test, they have said that everything is fine apart from a slight “suboptimal” sperm production. I understand this to mean that they are a bit lazy.

As we have issues on both sides, I’m finding it increasingly upsetting when I don’t have a positive pregnancy test each month. We  are both doing what we can and what we think is right. We have both taken up regular exercise, we’re eating right, we’ve giving up smoking and most drinking (I probably have two glasses of red wine tops, at the beginning of my cycle). We are both taking a good multi-vitamin, in addition to Folic Acid.

Is there anything that we can do apart from the above to help improve my partner’s sperm production? Is there anything else I can do to help myself? I really am getting myself so down about the whole thing. I’m trying to stay stress and worry free but that is easier said than done at the moment.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It’s so hard especially dealing with uncertainty not knowing when your going to get pregnant is stressful in itself. Trying not to worry is difficult when you are worried so getting help with your mind set is really important.there are a number of ways you can do this getting help such as counselling , we use hypnotherapy to help with mind set and also listening to downloadable audio meditations can be good and helpful.

There are also other tests that may be needed to check for underlying issues such as thyroid which will have an impact on your chances of conceiving.

Men are more fortunate than women in that they are producing sperm 24 / 7 so through diet and supplements   you may see an improvement in the sperm can’t be to bad or else your doctors would be advising you to get pregnant via an assisted route.

I think it’s important to have a plan of action and a timeline if the clomid doesn’t work and your doctors may refer you for further treatment or tests and investigations.
