My Baba went along to the launch of Julien Macdonald’s newborn and toddler collection ‘SMILE’ this morning at Mothercare, Westfield Shopping Centre, and we can confirm, we were overwhelmed with the cuteness factor. We chatted to Julien about the inspiration behind his latest collection, and asked how it compared to designing his usual red carpet dresses.
Tell us about the new Julien Macdonald newborn & toddler collection for Mothercare, what inspired you?
I have two young god children and I spend a lot of time with them. I’m always inspired by my lifestyle, things that are going on around me, what I’m doing. I had no children in my life then all of a sudden, every weekend, my house is full of kids. I’m always buying clothes for them so designing a baby collection was a natural path to take.
Smile is a baby fashion range for newborn up to 2 years and consists of fun and bright jersey daywear pieces as well as eight special limited edition party wear pieces for baby boys and girls.
Tell us why the collection is named ‘Smile’.
I named the collection ‘Smile’ as that’s exactly what we all do when we see a baby.
Is it true the collaboration is a result of persuasion by the parents of your godchildren?
I’ve always wanted to design affordable, fashionable baby clothes and the mother of my god-daughter Honey always told me I should design for babies as she wanted lovely designer clothes but without the price-tag.
How different was the experience of designing children’s clothes as opposed to red carpet glamour or womenswear?
Very different, with baby clothing you have to take into consideration a lot of technical aspects and safety is so important. We had to look at each individual trim and embellishment. The fabrics we used are incredibly soft and you have to ensure parents can just pop everything in the washing machine.
How much research did you have to do before putting pen to paper?
A lot of my friends with children gave me great advice such as easy popper-necks on bodysuits and zip-through fronts to make changing baby easier. We had to look at all the different weights and softness of netting & linings for the occasion dresses,
What’s your favourite item from the thirty-one piece collection?
I couldn’t possibly choose just one. It would be the black biker-style all-in-one for boys and the printed Smile dress for girls.
How is the autumn/winter range coming along?
I’m looking forward to being able to share the second collection with everyone. Expect more playful characters and fabulous designs and I may even venture into other categories outside of clothing. But that’s all top secret at the moment, watch this space!
A completely random question, but one we always ask our interviewees – what’s your favourite meal or recipe to share with friends or family?
