Garden Museum

Nestled beneath Lambeth Palace on the South Bank, the Garden Museum is truly a hidden gem. Herbs and veggies from the charming knot garden are used to supply the cafe, which serves up delicious lunches and teas. What’s more, this tiny museum runs a Seasonal Saturdays programme offering free, drop-in creative family activities every week.

Hampton Court Palace

These gardens are massive: 60 acres of formal gardens running down to the River Thames. Don’t miss the famous maze. Flower Show to rival Chelsea’s 8 – 13 July.

Chelsea Physic Garden

Founded in 1673 by the ‘Worshipful Society of Apothecaries’ for the study of the medicinal qualities of plants, this peaceful walled garden in the middle of Chelsea is one of London’s best kept secrets. Not a place for mad rushing around. There is a good trail that children can follow and an excellent cafe. See Kids’ London for details for Family Activity Days this summer.

Buckingham Palace Gardens

Ham House and Garden

Make the most of Ham’s beautiful gardens with their great range of nostalgic garden games including croquet, wooden Connect 4, quoits and noughts and crosses. Romeo and Juliet is this year’s outdoor theatre on 13 July. Downton Abbey fans will find the Below the Stairs’ tour interesting.
