We asked Tamara Heber-Percy, Co founder of Smith & Family, for her top five tips for some summer sunshine. Smith & Family is the new stand alone collection of family-friendly hotels around the world from the couple behind boutique hotel experts Mr & Mrs Smith.
Ekies All Senses Resort, Halkidiki, Greece
This is a recent addition to the collection and a great budget option. It’s classic Greece with a stylish twist – interiors are neutral with splashes of soft colour and minimalist design features. The hotel’s in a forest-backed bay on the peninsula of Halkidiki, and it’s easy to reach with direct BA flights to Thessaloniki. There’s plenty to keep the children occupied: snorkelling and boat trips are heaven in the crystal clear waters.
Barceló La Bobadilla, AndalucÃa, Spain
This is a rural retreat that really knows how to please adults and children alike: there’s an adults-only fine-dining restaurant as well as a bar especially for teenagers. It’s amid 350 hectares of olive groves, so it’s a really authentic experience – you feel immediately lost in the heart of AndalucÃa. Rooms are elegant with a hint of femininity, which feels incredibly relaxing… that is, until the children charge off for some horse riding.
Pine Cliffs Resort, Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve is a best-seller for family trips, with good reason, and Pine Cliffs is a classic family-holiday stay. It’s perched on the clifftop with wonderful views of the ocean and has absolutely everything you could need… before you even realise you need it. But it also manages to strike that fine balance between being large enough to have all the facilities that make parenting abroad a breeze (there are five outdoor pools!) without ever feeling impersonal.
Château les Merles, Dordogne, France
There are just 13 rooms at this beautiful château, and it’s exactly as lovely you’d imagine a rural French hideaway to be. The honey-toned exterior has a classic appeal, and inside the decor that has been brought bang up to date; it’s a sophisticated stay with an excellent spa and plenty of room for little ones to roam.
Constance le Prince Maurice, Mauritius
For a real splash of glamour I love Mauritius. Admittedly, it doesn’t come cheap, but when you wake up to the lapping waters of the Indian Ocean with the sun sneaking through the shutters, it’s a spend you won’t regret. This hotel offers palm-shaded luxury with all the trimmings, and the children will love the kids club: there’s even a trampoline and a treehouse.
