Half-Term Special: Morocco
We asked travel consultant Sarah Jackson from boutique-hotel experts Smith & Family for her favourite Moroccan destinations that make for first-class family holidays. Read on for a few of her favourites…
Rebali Riads, Essaouira
‘For blissful beachside luxury, I’d head to Rebali Riads, a child-friendly boutique bolthole with vast luxurious villas, private pools and bountiful hospitality. There’s also a gorgeous beach and rolling sand dunes on the doorstep, offering adventurous kids quad biking, kite surfing and camel rides, as well as a tennis court at the hotel (and even tours to the nearby farm to feed the goats). Top for smaller families are the gorgeous suites, but for larger families I’d recommend booking a whole villa: I love Riad Valmar, the largest, which has a beautiful private pool and plenty of outdoor space – three enclosed courtyards with a fountain, outdoor dining and fruit trees’.

Jnane Tamsna, Marrakech
‘A gorgeous riad-style retreat just outside the city walls of Marrakech, Jnane Tamsna has a lush and secluded setting, spread out over nine acres of palm-dotted tranquility… and it’s only a short drive to the buzzy Medina. The food here is fantastic: all the herbs and vegetables are supplied from the hotel’s own organic kitchen garden, perfect for dining al fresco in the courtyard or gardens. While the kids are busy with circus-skills classes (magic, juggling and acrobatics), ask the hotel to book the grown ups a romantic hot-air-balloon ride, or venture out for a guided mountain-bike tour of the surrounding palm groves’.

Le Jardin des Douars, Essaouira
‘Le Jardin des Douars is a hillside hideaway close to Essaouira’s windswept beaches – it has spacious grounds, jade-green heated pools and absolutely spot-on style. Children will love the array of activities on offer, including camel riding, kite surfing and cookery lessons, while adults can relax in the atmospheric marble-lined spa, sip tasty cocktails at the terrace bar and sample locally-sourced Moroccan fare at the delicious restaurant. Many of the rooms are ideal for families: my favourites are the Douaria Rooms, small self-contained houses with cosy lounges, a spacious kitchen and bedrooms a plenty’.
