If you’re looking for a pushchair that combines seriously good looks with comfort, clever technology and plenty of practical touches, the Maxi-Cosi Fame is well worth having on your radar.
For our Maxi-Cosi Fame review, we tried the pushchair with its coordinating carrycot in the gorgeous Sapphire Sand colourway, putting it through its paces to see how it fares in everyday family life.
And while there are plenty of clever extras to talk about, what impressed us most was that underneath all the bells and whistles is a genuinely lovely pushchair to use.
The Fame certainly looks the part. Sleek, beautifully finished and reassuringly substantial, it has the premium feel you’d expect from a pushchair at this price point.
Sapphire Sand is particularly lovely. It’s a soft, sophisticated neutral that feels contemporary without being too trend-led.
At 13.5kg, the Fame isn’t designed to be an ultra-lightweight travel buggy. What you get instead is a pushchair that feels sturdy and reassuring under your hands, with a smooth ride that handles the bumps and lumps of everyday life well.
Comfort is one of the Fame’s strongest suits.
The pushchair seat offers a lie-flat position with a high-density memory-foam inlay, while the ClimaFlow backrest uses breathable mesh to help regulate your child’s temperature. The seat can be used from birth and right through to 22kg, or approximately four years old.
For those early newborn months, however, we know that you can’t go wrong with a carrycot. And the Fame Carrycot feels beautifully spacious and cocooning. Its reversible breathable memory-foam mattress and ClimaFlow ventilation let little one sleep soundly without being too hot. There’s also a clever SoothingSlope feature that lets you gently incline the mattress with a strap.
One of our favourite features is Close2Me.
Rather than being fixed at one height, the carrycot can be adjusted up or down on the frame, bringing baby closer to you and reducing all that bending over during the newborn stage. It’s one of those relatively simple ideas that makes you wonder why more pushchairs don’t do it.
The Fame Carrycot is designed for use from birth to around 6 months, or up to 9kg.
Then we get to the fun stuff.
The Fame features Maxi-Cosi’s LumiRide system, with integrated LED lighting built into the frame to illuminate darker streets and pathways.
It might initially sound like a luxury extra, but think dark winter afternoons, poorly lit pavements and the school-run home after sunset, and it suddenly starts making an awful lot of sense. (Yep, those days are coming, people!)
There’s also an integrated powerbank, so you can charge your phone while you’re out and about. I mean, genius, or what?
For parents whose battery is perpetually being destroyed by Google Maps, WhatsApp and approximately 700 photographs of their baby, this is a very welcome addition. And yep, we know all about the Insta doom scroll!
This is where a premium pushchair really needs to earn its stripes, and we found the Fame lovely to use. It feels sturdy without being cumbersome to manoeuvre, and the substantial chassis gives it a reassuringly smooth feel when you’re out walking.
There’s also plenty of room underneath for the inevitable accumulation of changing bags, coats, shopping, snacks and assorted child-related paraphernalia.
It feels very much like a pushchair designed for everyday use, rather than something that looks beautiful but becomes irritating the moment you actually leave the house.
Another big plus is longevity.
Once your baby has outgrown the carrycot, the Fame converts into a roomy pushchair that can be used until approximately four years old. It can also become a complete travel system, with the frame compatible with Maxi-Cosi’s SlideTech car-seat system.
That ability to move from a newborn carrycot to a pushchair and a compatible infant car seat means you’re investing in one system designed to see you through several stages.
It’s the smaller touches that often make the biggest difference when you’re using a pushchair day after day, and the Fame has clearly been designed with those realities in mind.
The carrycot is ventilated, spacious and comfortable; the pushchair feels smooth and substantial; there’s plenty of storage; and features such as the adjustable carrycot, built-in lighting and phone charging genuinely add something rather than feeling like technology for technology’s sake.
The result is a pushchair that feels luxurious, certainly, but importantly practical too.
