How to do a 3D Hand Drawing

YC came home from school the other week with this really cool art “trick” that she had learnt.  It was how to make a 3D hand picture by using only straight and curved lines.  I have seen it around on those 5-minute craft videos, but I haven’t tried it out.  As YC was really excited by it we set up a drawing station so that she could teach me how to do it.

For more ideas follow my how to draw board on Pinterest.  Don’t forget to save the pin for later.

To make your own 3D hand you will need:

  • Piece of paper
  • Coloured pens
  • Pencil

Draw an outline of your hand in the centre of your piece of paper.

Draw straight lines on either side of your hand outline.  They need to be about 1cm apart, but more importantly they need to line up on both sides.

Now connect each line with a slightly curved line INSIDE the outline of your hand.

Watch out for the fingers.  Between the fingers the lines need to be straight.  But on the inside of each finger the line needs to be curved.

It is a neat optical illusion.  You could always experiment with how close the lines are together or now many different colours you could use.
