Easy Quilled Snowflakes: A Craft for Older Children

The majority of my crafts and activities are for children of all ages, but I felt it was time for a craft that was solely for older children. That is not to say younger children can’t give these easy quilled snowflakes a go, but quilling is notoriously tricky.  I got my first quilling set when I was around 10 and I spent many hours trying things out with it, but as is often the case, I moved on and forgot about it. Fast forward 20 years and I have rediscovered my love for quilling.

So What Is Quilling?

Well it is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. Do you need specialised equipment to do it? Well yes and no. Of course if your child really enjoys doing it then of course it is much easier with the right tools, but saying that you can use ordinary house items. I will add that it is much easier to buy the paper for it rather than having to cut paper into thin strips.

To make your own easy quilled snowflakes you will need:

  • Paper – quilled paper is readily and cheaply available at Amazon and hobby craft.
  • Toothpicks
  • PVA glue
  • Glitter
  • Thread

How to quill

Here is a great video about how to quill.

Instead of using the slotted quilling tool, like in the video, you can use the toothpick instead.

The person is using a sizer to make sure that all the circles are the same size, again you don’t really need it, it can be done by eye.

How to make the snowflake

You will need to make 12 circles the same size and 6 smaller circles.

Turn the 12 bigger circles into eye shapes by gentle squeezing the circle between your fingers.

Start gluing 6 of the eye shapes into a star shape. When it has dried add the other eye shapes around the edge, glue them into place and again leave for a minute to dry. Finish the design by adding the smaller circles to the tips of the outer eye shapes.

Finally, using your finger, gentle pat glue onto the top surface of the snowflake and sprinkle glitter on top.

Leave it to dry over night and then add some thread though one of the circles to create a loop, so that you can hang up your snowflake ornament.
