Fire Breathing Dragon Craft for Chinese New Year

I’m sure some of you have seen this craft floating around on Pinterest for a while; it certainly keeps popping up on my feed. With Chinese New Year just around the corner I needed a craft to do with my Beaver Scout colony for part of a badge that they are earning.  This fire breathing dragon one looked a nice and simple one to do with 15 6-8 year olds.

Make sure you follow my craft board on Pinterest, and don’ forget to save the pin for later.

You will need:

  • Toilet roll tube
  • Tissue paper
  • Glue
  • Pom poms
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors

To begin with you will need to cut some tissue paper into strips and scales. As we were doing this craft as part of some Chinese New Year celebrations we went for the colours yellow, orange and red.

Glue your scales onto the body of the toilet roll tube.

Then add 2 large pom poms at the back for the eyes and 2 smaller ones nearer the front for the nostrils.

Next add your goggly eyes to the large pom poms. If you don’t have goggly eyes then you could always use a felt tip pen to draw on the eyes.

Finally glue your long strips of tissue paper to the opening of the toilet roll. This should be the opposite side to where the eyes are.

To make it look like your dragon is breathing fire you can blow through the back of the toilet roll to make it look like the fire is coming out of the front.

My Beavers all seemed to really enjoy making them, it was slight pandemonium but in a good way.  They spent a lot of the time afterwards running around making their Dragons breath fire.
