Rhyming Words Match Game

Make sure you are following our reading board on Pinterest for more ideas.

An important part of learning to read is learning about rhyming words. Why? Well there are a number of reasons:

a) it helps them to notice and work with sounds that are in words.

b) it helps them to predict what the next word could be in a sentence.

c) it can help them understand that words that rhyme often share common sounds e.g. cat and mat both end in -at or goat and boat both have -oat sounds in them. This will help them when it comes to writing.

You will need:

I cut mine up into individual cards and laminated them so that they can be used again and again.

Simply get your little one to match the pictured word to the word it rhymes with.

YC really struggles with rhyming words, so this is a nice simple activity that we can pick out just a few to do at a time before dinner.
