The Beauty Toolkit: Choosing Your Foundation Brush

Choosing makeup is a minefield in itself, never mind having to find the right brushes! To make things easier, we’ve put together a collection of our favourite foundation brushes. Watch this space and we’ll be covering other makeup tools and brushes very soon.

The liquid one: Smashbox Foundation Brush

It’s always worth investing in a good set of brushes, even when it feels like you’ve spent so much on quality makeup already. This Smashbox brush is one of our favourite tools for the job. Unlike many foundation applicators, this brush has non-makeup-absorbing bristles, which means it offers optimum coverage with minimal waste. We fell for Smashbox over its Photo Finish Primer, now we can’t get enough of their brushes!

The powder one: bareMinerals Beautiful Finish Foundation Brush

Before we tried powdered foundation, we were pretty sceptical. Would it provide the coverage we need? Would it be long-lasting? Then bareMinerals came along assuring us that powdered foundation could offer the flawless and natural coverage we were looking for. This brush has been designed with their mineral foundation in mind. It’s quick and provides even coverage. We love it.

The luxurious one: Tweezerman Powder Brush

Famed for their tweezers (obviously), we would never have expected to be swearing by Tweezerman for their makeup brushes. This supersoft powder brush feels so luxurious to brush across your face. It’s recommended for mineral foundation and pressed or loose powder. However we love to use it for finishing off, brushing and blending everything together.

The ‘stop using your fingers’ one: RMS Beauty Skin2Skin Foundation Brush

We advise against applying foundation with your fingers because it does increase the risk of transferring bacteria into your pores. This RMS brush is great for breaking the habit and transitioning to a foundation brush. Not only does it look like a fun swirly cake, but it also gives you that natural-looking finish you’ve been achieving by applying your foundation with your fingers. It’s designed to imitate skin-to-skin application, so feels lovely against your face.

The quick and easy one: Zoeva 104 Buffer Brush

This Zoeva buffer brush is a solid favourite for those in a hurry (which is us, most of the time..). It makes applying foundation quick and easier, which means you can rush out of the door or spend the rest of your routine perfecting those eyeliner flicks. The bristles are super close together which guarantees your liquid or powder foundation will go on streak-free and fabulous.

The perfect finish: Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponges

It’s essential that you clean up and perfect your foundation for that flawless look. For this we always rely on Real Techniques. You can reach those nooks around your nose and eyes with the pointed or curved edge. We prefer to dampen it a little, but you can use it dry too. It’s washable and reusable, but be sure to replace every two months or so.
