Summer is sadly coming to an end – the days are getting shorter and we are slowly being forced to swap our t-shirts and shorts for something a little warmer. It always feels a little sad, but really, there is no reason because there is plenty to look forward to in winter with the family. With good deals to be had on off peak holidays as well as some superb breaks for the school holidays, we’ve put together a list of our top family holidays for autumn and winter holidays this year.
You might fear rain and cold weather, but locals say that autumn is actually the best season to plan a visit to the Highlands. Best of all, no midges! All other wildlife is alive and well. A fun activity for all, the Highlands are full of wildlife parks and centres where kids can get up close and personal with the local wildlife. With fewer tourists, this will make a visit to the ever-popular Isle of Skye for instance that much more enjoyable. Don’t forget waterproofs and wellies for all as the weather can be unpredictable.
Ski holidays, in my opinion, are the perfect family holiday and France is home to some of the best resorts in Europe. Val d’Isere, La Plagne, Tignes – all these amazing resorts are located in the French Alps and are exceptionally suited for a week of skiing with the family – just be prepared for a continuous onslaught of snowballs. There is nothing quite like the look on your kids face when they see the snowy resorts for the first time. There are plenty of family friendly hotels with some, like Mark Warner’s French resorts, even offering childcare throughout the day. Throughout the day the kids will get to grips with the basics at ski school where they can make friends and tire themselves out on the slopes while parents can enjoy some time together exploring the mountains.
If you’re a sufferer of the winter blues and in need of some extra vitamin D, then a quick trip to the Canary Islands is the ideal place for your family holiday this autumn and winter. With temperatures sitting at around 20 degrees Celsius throughout the winter months and very cheap deals going there is no reason not to pack up the family and head to Tenerife or Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands have been catering for British families for decades and know what families look for in a holiday.
The ultimate winter holiday destination, Lapland is a once in a lifetime trip for families. Step through the wardrobe and into real life version Narnia. The moment you step off the plane you enter a winter wonderland of reindeer pulled sleds and magical winter villages. Enjoy cosy evenings around the fire in your log cabin after a day of huskie rides and visiting Santa.
Autumn/winter is a great time to visit Florida. Warm days and cooler evenings mean you won’t be walking around the parks in uncomfortable temperatures. Get lost in the magic of the festive season with Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom. Enjoy charming stage shows and animated parades full of colour, lights and sparkle. You can also head on over to Islands of Adventure to celebrate Grinchmas with TheWhos who cover Seuss Landing in tinsel and cheer! Wherever you are in Orlando during the holidays, you are guaranteed to be surrounded by celebration and fun and of course, sunshine!
