How To Keep Your Little One Safe In The Car – NEW Initiative ‘Safety Within’

Graco’s Safety Within campaign will launch on its Instagram channel from November 17th to 23rd to support Brake’s Road Safety Week.

This campaign is all about Graco’s commitment to helping parents keep their little ones safe on the road. Safety Within is an initiative sharing practical advice on car seat usage and road safety. Did you know that nearly 1 in 6 week-day accidents happen during school-run hours, with the afternoon rush being the highest risk time? Graco knows that car safety is a top priority for 87% of parents, so they’ve taken action.

Safety Within sees Graco actively supporting parents with tips for safe driving, choosing the right car seat, and managing distractions—so every journey is as safe as possible for the whole family.

Tips for Safe Driving with Children

The Safety Within campaign will share insights and practical advice to help parents ensure car safety at every stage, including:

  • Managing Nerves for New Parents: Tips for that first car trip home with a newborn
  • Encouraging Older Children to Use Car Seats: Strategies to keep older kids in appropriate car seats for their age and size
  • Avoiding Distractions: Tips to maintain focus while driving and teach children to avoid distracting the driver

Essential Car Seat Safety Tips

To help parents navigate car seat safety, Graco’s campaign covers a few critical guidelines:

  • Harness Positioning: Ensure the car seat harness is directly level with the child’s shoulders and the headrest is aligned with the chin to prevent movement in a collision.
  • Handlebar Positioning: Keep the infant carrier handlebar upright to act as a secondary safety measure in the event of a crash.
  • Airbag Safety: Legally the front seat airbag must be deactivated when seating a child, both rear-facing and front-facing.
  • 5-Point Harness Test: Conduct a “pinch test” on the belt strap to check security. If the strap bunches when pinched, it needs further tightening.
  • Seat Positioning for Young Children: Position the youngest passenger behind the front passenger seat, so that the driver can assist the child from the pavement in the event of an emergency.
  • Winter Coat Removal: Remove a child’s coat before securing them in the car seat. A snug fit with the harness is essential, and a blanket can be used for warmth afterwards.

Understanding R129 Car Seat Standards

Graco’s campaign includes guidance on the R129 car seat standard, which mandates more stringent testing and guidelines to ensure a child is properly secured. Parents will find helpful reminders on:

  • Choosing the correct car seat based on height, age, and development
  • Ensuring a proper fit for maximum protection
  • Spotlight on the SnugTurn System: Graco’s Latest Safety Solution

As part of their commitment to safety, Graco has recently launched the SnugTurn System—a car seat system designed to offer maximum protection and convenience. With a rotating base and compatibility with two car seat models, this system is suitable from birth up to around four years of age, making it ideal for young families.

Key Features of the SnugTurn System

  • SnugTurn i-Size R129 Rotating Base: This 360-degree rotating base supports both the SnugLite and SnugGo car seats, allowing for easy transitions in and out of the car.
  • SnugLite i-Size R129 Car Seat: This seat is suitable from birth until approx. 12 months and is remarkably lightweight and ergonomic, weighing just 3.3kg with a carry handle.
  • SnugGo i-Size R129 2-in-1 Convertible Car Seat: This 360-degree rotating seat grows with the child from birth to four years old.

Meeting i-Size and R129 standards, the SnugTurn System has undergone enhanced side-impact testing, ensuring longer rearward-facing positioning for added safety.

Nala's Dream by Taylan Kurtul

Nala’s Dream is a magical children’s story with an incredibly poignant story behind it. It was first imagined by five-year-old Taylan Kurtul, who dreamed up an adventure in which his real-life kitten, Nala, travels into space. Taylan sadly died in February 2024, just eight months after being diagnosed with a medulloblastoma brain tumour. His mum lovingly brought the story he created to life as a book in his memory, celebrating Taylan’s wonderful imagination while raising vital funds for Brain Tumour Research. A beautiful legacy filled with adventure, love and a little boy’s magic.
