The Solo Babymoon: Everything Mothers-To-Be Need To Know For 2027

Somewhere in the second trimester, a thought arrives that few women say out loud: I would quite like some of this time to myself. Not away from anyone in particular. Just a stretch of days that belong to her and the baby, before life reorganises itself around night feeds and visitors. There is now a name for acting on that thought, and it has quietly become one of the fastest-growing ways to travel while pregnant.

What is a solo babymoon?

Not simply a holiday alone, though some women do exactly that. The version growing fastest is the Solo Babymoon retreat: a residential week where every woman arrives on her own and finds a group of fifteen others at the same stage. The days mix birth preparation classes with prenatal movement sessions, covering pelvic floor as well as yoga, alongside meditation and guided visualisation, food cooked by a private chef, massage, and a great deal of legitimised rest. Evenings belong to the circle, the whole group around one table, where the conversation does half the work of the retreat.

Where to go

mom’z, Spain & Portugal

The best-known example in Europe, and the one that named the category. mom’z hosts fifteen women at a time on private luxury estates near Barcelona and near Lisbon, every month of the year. Close to 1,000 women have been since 2023, and its Google rating stands at 5.0 across more than a hundred reviews. Both estates are under three hours from London.

Retreat highlights: Five days and four nights all-inclusive, daily birth preparation with childbirth educators, prenatal movement sessions including pelvic floor work, meditation and guided visualisation, evening circles, private health nutritionist chef and pregnancy-focused menus, massage, midwife on call throughout, prenatal clinic a short drive away, from €2,450.

Why women go alone

Ask them and one answer comes up more than any other: I am the only pregnant woman I know. Her friends are a few years behind or a few years ahead; she lives in a city that is not the one she grew up in, and her own mother is a flight away. She has read everything and still does not feel ready, and there is nobody at the same stage to say so to.

And underneath that, the one that comes up most once the week has started: it was the first time she had been alone with the pregnancy. Not managing it around work, or a partner’s questions, or anyone else’s excitement. Just her and the baby, with nothing else asked of her. That is difficult to arrange at home and almost impossible on a trip taken with someone else. It is the quiet reason the solo version exists.

Who you’ll meet

This is the part nobody puts on the booking page, and it is the part women talk about afterwards. The other fourteen are women in their thirties and forties, half expecting a first baby and half a second or third, with high-calibre careers: they run teams, wards, deals, companies and practices of their own. They come from London more than anywhere else, then Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich and even New York, and a surprising number live far from where they grew up, which is exactly why nobody at home is pregnant alongside them. Well-read, used to being the most organised person in the room, and quietly unsure whether that helps this time.

Put fifteen of them around one table and they recognise each other within an evening. The conversation that is hard to have with a friend who has never been pregnant turns out to be easy with a stranger at the same stage in the same kind of life. The solitude turns out to be the doorway rather than the destination. Women arrive alone and leave with a WhatsApp group of like-minded pregnant friends, for support, honest exchange and a surprising amount of fun, and the oldest of those groups, from 2023, are still going three years on.

When to go

The comfortable window is wider than most articles suggest: roughly week 14 to week 35. The second trimester is easiest for flying, and into the third, shorter flights and gentler plans win. Retreats at the professional end host women right up to week 35, with a midwife on call and a clinic nearby, which takes most of the worry out of the timing question.

What it costs

A residential five-day retreat with everything included, room, all meals, classes and massage, runs from about €2,450. A self-planned Solo Babymoon can cost anything you like. The retreat premium buys the programme and the people, and most women will tell you the people were the better half of the deal.

Three questions to ask before booking

How many nights, and is everything included? How often does it run, and how many women have been before you? Who is looking after you, and who else will be there? Five minutes on a provider’s website answers all three, and tells you nearly everything. mom’z publishes its answers to all of them on their website.
