Fox Vs Chicken Game

Many years ago, when EC and YC were attending school in London, we had a chess teacher come around a couple of times to introduce them to the game.  One of the games that she introduced was this fox vs chicken game.  I am actually not completely sure if that was its name or if I have remembered it incorrectly (which is quite possible).

To play fox vs chicken you will need:

• A chess board
• The white queen
• All the black pawns

This game is a beginner’s game; it aims to help children plan ahead before they start adding in more pieces.

The aim of the game is for the player being the chickens they need to get one of their pawns to the other side of the board and turn it into a fox.  The player being the fox needs to stop the chickens.  If the fox takes all the chickens, then they win.  If a chicken gets to the other side or captures the queen, they win.

Starting places

To set up the board put all the pawns and the queen in the starting places as you would in chess.

The pieces move in the exact same way as they do in a game of chess.  The queen can go in all directions and as many spaces as required.  The pawn can move 2 spaces forward as an opening move and then only one space thereafter.  They can also only capture the queen in a diagonal move.

I win! My pawn got to the other side.

I was playing it over the summer with NC’s Grandmother and really is a fun little game even if your little ones know how to play chess.
