Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is dominating cinema conversations right now, but could the blockbuster also spark a new wave of baby names inspired by Greek mythology?
It wouldn’t be the first time popular culture has shaped naming trends, and according to new data from JoJo Maman Bébé, many legendary names are already climbing the charts.
Leading the way is Penelope, the loyal wife of Odysseus, who remains the UK’s most popular Greek mythology-inspired girls’ name, with 1,174 babies given the name in 2025.
Close behind is Athena (519), the goddess of wisdom and courage, followed by Rhea (109), Persephone (77) and Gaia (77).
For boys, Atlas tops the list, with 355 babies receiving the name in 2025. Once associated solely with the Titan condemned to carry the weight of the heavens, Atlas has become one of the UK’s most sought-after modern names.
Other mythology-inspired favourites include Ares (56), Apollo (39), Artemis (17) and Perseus (8).
From books and films to television and celebrity culture, popular culture has long influenced the names parents choose for their children. As Greek mythology continues to inspire new generations through blockbuster films like The Odyssey, timeless names with rich stories and powerful meanings are finding their way back onto birth certificates.

With The Odyssey introducing these ancient stories to a whole new audience, it will be fascinating to see whether names like Penelope, Athena and Atlas continue their rise—or whether lesser-known mythological names such as Apollo and Perseus enjoy their own moment in the spotlight.
